Domesticating Dogs

WORKBOOK LAB – Upper Division

Overview

This lab and accompanying workbook elucidate how mutation, random drift, and population divergence underlie the logic of phylogenetic analysis. Starting with wolves from wild populations, students domesticate dogs in isolated villages, then trade computers and attempt to reconstruct each other's patterns of domestication using a simple tree reconstruction algorithm.
