Mendelian Pigs

Overview

This tutorial, updated with new interactive content in 2024, connects basic Mendelian and population genetics by investigating variation in the coat color of pigs. Students first experiment with crosses, using Punnett squares to explore rules of inheritance. Next, they examine the molecular basis for dominant and recessive melanin alleles. They apply what they learn to make and test both family-level and population-level predictions.
